If your vessel is under 3 metres, the minimum character height is different from most boats 3 metres and over. Tell us what you are putting the number on, enter the SA registration number and we will make the complete pair from premium 3M marine-grade vinyl, pre-spaced and ready for DIY installation.
You get the legal size you need without turning the side of the boat into a lettering exercise.
TOTAL PRICE $59 – includes both sides, DIY kit & express post
That is the key South Australian sizing question for most boats:
The number must be displayed on both sides towards the bow, on a vertical surface, in a colour that contrasts with the hull. It must be clearly legible from at least 50 metres while the vessel is underway in clear weather.
If a highly flared bow makes the normal position impractical, South Australia provides a process to seek approval for an alternative position. That is a rules question, so we keep the full detail on the SA information page rather than burying it in the order form.
A 150 mm registration number gives you plenty of room to see when the spacing is wrong. A character tilted slightly or a gap that grows across the line can make a perfectly good boat look untidy.
So we set the spacing before the vinyl reaches you. The complete number is held together on application tape and goes onto the hull as one aligned graphic.
Position the line once. Apply it. Remove the tape. The individual characters stay where we put them.
Every DIY kit includes:
The difficult part of DIY lettering is usually not understanding the instructions. It is knowing you only get one first attempt.
Our Shipshape Guarantee takes that pressure away. Follow the supplied instructions and, if you make a genuine installation mistake, contact us and we will make a replacement kit FREE.
You still install it carefully. You just do not have to install it nervously.
Registration numbers spend their whole life outside. They sit through hot South Australian sun, salt spray, wash-downs and the weeks between trips when the hull is still exposed.
We use premium 3M marine-grade vinyl and our Ocean Proof™ production method because a boat rego number needs to stay stuck, keep a clean edge and remain easy to read long after installation day.
The lettering is cut rather than printed onto a large clear panel, so the hull remains visible between the characters and the result looks more like part of the boat.
South Australia requires the registration number to contrast with the hull and remain clearly legible from 50 metres in clear weather while the vessel is underway.
That makes colour choice simple: start with contrast. A dark hull needs a clearly lighter number. A light hull needs a clearly darker one.
Once the contrast is right, choose a clean lettering style that suits the boat. The goal is to make a compulsory number look considered without making it harder to identify.
Boat Names Australia has specialised in boat names, graphics and registration numbers since 2003, backed by more than 30 years of hands-on vinyl and boat-lettering experience.
More than 70,000 Australian boat owners have used Boat Names Australia, and the site currently displays 341 Google reviews.
That experience matters in small places: how a 150 mm character sits on a curved bow, how close letters can be without crowding, how fine corners behave and how easy the whole line is to position.
We do the fiddly work before the parcel leaves. You get the satisfying part.

Use the supplied squeegee, instructions and video guide to finish the job cleanly.
For most SA vessels less than 3 metres long, registration characters must be at least 100 mm high. For vessels 3 metres or longer, the minimum is generally 150 mm. PWC registration characters must be at least 100 mm high.
South Australian registration numbers must be displayed on both sides of the vessel towards the bow, on a vertical surface, in a position where they can meet the visibility requirement.
They must be clearly legible from at least 50 metres away while the vessel is underway in clear weather.
The number must contrast with the surface it is displayed on. Choose a clearly lighter colour on a dark hull or a clearly darker colour on a light hull.
A South Australian PWC, including a jet ski, must display registration characters at least 100 mm high on both sides. Marine Safety SA also says they should be above the waterline and clearly readable from 50 metres in fine, clear conditions.
SA.GOV.AU says that if a highly flared bow makes it difficult to display the numbers in the normal position, you can seek approval from the Department for Infrastructure and Transport for a more suitable position.
