Boat Registration Northern Territory & ACT

The Northern Territory and ACT operate differently from Australia’s six states.

Recreational boats in the Northern Territory generally do not require registration under a conventional recreational vessel-registration system.

The ACT generally recognises vessels registered under the law of another Australian state.

Boat Rego ACT

Fancy heading out on ACT’s lakes and waterways? ACT doesn’t have a traditional boat registration system and reuires you to register your boat through another state or territory. NSW is popular choice.

NSW requires:

  • Registration numbers to be visible from 60m away
  • Numbers are to be contrasting in colour to the ship’s hull
  • Mechanically propelled vessels should have numbers at least 150mm high on both sides on the forward section of the hull
  • Sailing vessels should have registration numbers at least 100mm high on both sides of the hull adjacent to the stern
  • PWCs should have characters at least 100mm high on both sides
  • Commercial vessels should have permit numbers or commercial registration numbers at least 150mm high on each side as well

Boat Rego Northern Territory

The NT makes things nice and easy. Recreational vessels do not need to be registered, and operators do not need a licence.

Are you moving to the NT from interstate and can’t believe what you’re reading? You can find more info on the NT government website.

Happy boating!

What about other Australian States' Boat Registration?

Are you moving interstate? Or planning to cruise around Australia? (Ahhh, lucky you! Now that’s the life…) Just a head’s up, many states require you to register your vessel if you stay for more than 3 months.
Have a look at our Australian Boat Rego overview page to see the  requirements for each state and territory.
