Getting the number from Service NSW is the easy part. Making a big legal registration number look neat on the side of your boat is where things can go wrong.
Enter your NSW registration number, tell us what type of vessel you have, then choose a colour and style that suits the hull. We make the complete number from premium 3M marine-grade vinyl, line every character up and send it ready to apply as one neat unit.
No measuring the gap between six separate letters. No trying to rescue the last character because the first five wandered uphill.
Just a clean NSW registration number that is easy to position, easy to read and looks like it belongs on the boat.
TOTAL PRICE $59 – includes both sides, DIY kit & express post
NSW keeps the basic sizing fairly simple, but the rule changes depending on what you are putting the number on:
NSW also requires the number to use solid, clear numerals and uppercase letters, contrast with the hull and sit well above the normal waterline so it can be seen at all times.
Powerboats and PWC display the number on both sides. A sailing boat can display it on both sides or on the transom.
Choose the vessel type when you order and we can make the characters at the appropriate minimum height. If you want the full legal detail before ordering, use our NSW registration guide.
A registration number is unforgiving. One letter a few millimetres out can make the whole line look wrong.
That is why we do the spacing before the kit leaves us. Your complete number is held together on application tape, so you position the line once instead of positioning every character separately.
Line it up. Squeegee it down. Peel the application tape away.
The spacing you saw on the bench is the spacing you get on the boat.
Your kit also includes:
NSW boats can see a lot in one season: summer UV, salt spray, wash-downs, ramps, moorings and plenty of time sitting exposed between trips.
We use premium 3M marine-grade vinyl and our Ocean Proofâ„¢ production method because a registration number has to cope with more than getting wet.
The result is durable cut lettering made for long-term marine exposure, without the bulky clear rectangle you get with a printed label.
The hull shows through between the characters, so the finished number looks cleaner and more integrated with the boat.
The most common reason people hesitate with DIY boat lettering is not the design. It is the moment they have to stick it to the hull.
So we remove that worry.

Our kits are designed to be easy enough that you should not need it. It is simply there so you can order and install with more confidence.
The rule is there for a reason: your registration number needs to be easy to identify. NSW requires solid, clear text in a colour that contrasts with the hull.
That does not mean you are stuck with something that looks like it came from a hardware-store alphabet sheet.
Choose a solid colour with obvious contrast, then select a lettering style that suits the lines of your boat. We keep the registration characters readable while giving you a much more considered result.
For NSW, avoid decorative treatments that turn the required characters into outlines only or otherwise reduce the solid, clear appearance of the registration number.
Boat Names Australia has specialised in boat names, graphics and registration numbers since 2003, backed by more than 30 years of hands-on boat-lettering experience.

That experience shows up in the details you only notice when they are wrong: character spacing, tiny points that lift, colour contrast, surface preparation and how the whole line sits against the shape of the hull.

Yes. The NSW Government says the displayed registration number must use numerals and uppercase letters, with solid, clear text that contrasts with the hull.

NSW requires the text to be solid and clear. For that reason, choose solid registration characters with strong contrast rather than an outline-only treatment.
