In Queensland, the number size is not simply “one size fits every boat”. It changes depending on whether your boat can plane, cannot plane, or is a PWC.
Tell us what you have, enter your QLD registration number and choose a colour that stands out clearly against the hull. We make the complete registration number from premium 3M marine-grade vinyl and pre-space it so you can position it as one unit.
That means less measuring, less fiddling and a much better chance of getting it straight first time.
TOTAL PRICE $59 – includes both sides, DIY kit & express post
That one answer changes the Queensland minimum size.
Queensland also requires the registration number to sit above the waterline, contrast with the hull and be legible from 30 metres away.
We make the ordering choice obvious so you can select the right minimum size for your vessel type instead of trying to decode the rule at checkout.
On a planing boat, 150 mm characters are not subtle. If the spacing drifts, you notice it from the ramp.
So we do not send you a pile of loose letters and hope for the best.
We pre-space the full registration number on application tape. You line up one complete graphic, secure it, squeegee it down and remove the tape.
The characters finish evenly spaced because they started evenly spaced.
Every DIY kit includes:
Most customers only install a registration number occasionally. We do this every working day.
That is why the kit is designed around your side of the job: simple positioning, pre-set spacing and clear instructions.
And if you follow those instructions but make a genuine installation mistake, our Shipshape Guarantee means we will make another kit and send it FREE.
It is a safety net, not an excuse for a complicated product.
Queensland is not gentle on exterior graphics. Strong UV, warm hulls, saltwater and frequent washing all work on the vinyl long after installation day.
We use premium 3M marine-grade vinyl and our Ocean Proof™ production method to make registration numbers for real marine exposure, not just for looking good in the parcel.
Good material also helps preserve the crisp edges and contrast that make a registration number easy to read from the distance Queensland requires.
Queensland requires a clear light-on-dark or dark-on-light result and the registration number must be readable from 30 metres away.
So start with the hull colour, then choose the registration colour.
White or light hull? Go clearly darker. Dark hull? Go clearly lighter. The goal is obvious contrast, not a fashionable colour that disappears ten metres from the boat.
You can still choose a typeface and finish that suits the vessel – just keep the legal job of the number first.
If you are marking a qualifying tender rather than the parent boat, do not automatically order the standard boat number and assume the same rule applies.
Queensland’s current tender rule can exempt a qualifying tender from separate registration when the conditions are met, but the tender must be marked with the word ‘TENDER’ and the parent ship’s registration number in characters at least 75 mm high. If exterior marking is not practicable, the rule provides an alternative inside marking arrangement.
That is a separate use case, so we would link from this page to the Queensland INFO guide rather than bury the tender detail in the normal order path.
Boat Names Australia has specialised in boat names, graphics and registration numbers since 2003, built on more than 30 years of boat-lettering experience.
More than 70,000 Australian boat owners have used Boat Names Australia, and the website currently displays 341 Google reviews.
That history matters because the small choices add up: how the characters are spaced, how the vinyl handles fine corners, how the application tape behaves and how the colour reads against a curved hull in bright light.
We make those decisions every day so your part can stay simple.

Use the supplied kit and instructions to position the number cleanly on the hull.
For a Queensland boat capable of planing, registration characters must be at least 150 mm high. For a non-planing boat, the minimum is 75 mm. For a PWC, including a jet ski, the minimum is 100 mm.
The key question is whether the boat is capable of achieving a planing attitude. Planing boats use the 150 mm minimum. Other boats use the 75 mm minimum unless they are PWC, which use 100 mm.
A planing boat must display registration numbers on both sides, above the waterline. The numbers must contrast with the hull and be legible from 30 metres away.
Yes. A Queensland boat that is not capable of planing may display the registration number on both sides or on the stern, using characters at least 75 mm high.
A Queensland PWC, including a jet ski, must display registration characters at least 100 mm high on both sides.
Queensland requires the registration numbers to be legible from 30 metres away.
They must contrast with the hull – dark characters on a light background or light characters on a dark background – so the number remains clearly legible.
A qualifying tender can be exempt from separate registration when the Queensland conditions are met. It must be marked with ‘TENDER‘ and the parent ship’s registration number in characters at least 75 mm high, subject to the rule’s alternative where exterior marking is not practicable.
