In Western Australia, boat registration numbers are not a choose-any-colour, choose-any-font product.
WA requires black, plain block characters positioned vertically. If the hull behind the number is not white, the characters need a white surround of at least 7 mm.
So we keep the design decision simple: tell us the vessel type and registration number, and we build the kit around the WA display requirements rather than around a decorative font menu.
TOTAL PRICE $59 – includes both sides, DIY kit & express post
Western Australia uses different minimum character dimensions depending on what you are registering:
The current WA guidance also says the registration characters must be black, plain block, vertically positioned and clearly visible. On a non-white hull, each character needs a white surround at least 7 mm wide.
The annual registration sticker itself is fixed on the port side next to the registration number.
WA gives you enough dimensions to measure without also having to measure every gap between every character.
We pre-space the complete registration number on application tape so the black block characters stay aligned while you position the whole line. On a non-white hull, the white surround can be built into the finished layout rather than improvised character by character.
That turns a rule-heavy job into one clean application.
Your DIY kit includes:
Large block characters are easy to read. They are also easy to notice when the whole line is not quite straight.
That is why the spacing is already fixed before installation, and why we back the DIY process with our Shipshape Guarantee.
Follow the supplied instructions and, if you make a genuine installation mistake, contact us and we will make a replacement kit FREE.
The aim is not to make you use the guarantee. It is to make you comfortable enough to do the job properly.
WA has already decided the colour and basic type style. The material still matters.
We use premium 3M marine-grade vinyl and our Ocean Proofâ„¢ production method so the black characters and white surround are made for long-term outdoor and marine exposure, not just for passing inspection on day one.
Sun, salt, wash-downs and heat all keep working after you have forgotten about the installation. Good vinyl is what helps the number stay a non-event.
There is no need to spend ten minutes deciding between script, italic or an outline colour. WA requires plain black block characters, vertically positioned – not slanting.
White hull? Black block lettering can sit directly against it. Non-white hull? Add the required minimum 7 mm white surround so the characters remain compliant and obvious.
The design goal is not to make the registration number decorative. It is to make it crisp, properly proportioned and professionally positioned so it does not cheapen the rest of the boat.

In WA the legal design is deliberately simple, which means production quality becomes more visible. Straight baselines, consistent spacing, clean corners and a neat white surround are the details that separate a professional result from a set of hardware-store letters.
We make those details part of the kit before it reaches you.
