How to Design Your Boat Name Online

Design your boat name yourself and see how it looks before you order.
Our online Boat Name Designer lets you experiment with different fonts, colours, shadows, outlines and sizes until you find a combination that suits your boat and her name.
You can also preview your design against a colour similar to your boat, add boat registration numbers and a home port, and see your price before placing your order.

In this guide

1. Enter Your Boat Name

Start by typing your boat name into the YOUR BOAT NAME box. It is case-sensitive, so if
you want it to be all capital letters, then type it that way.

As you type, the preview at the top of the designer changes automatically, so you can
immediately see what your name looks like.

Handy Tip

The size slider around the preview changes only how large the design appears on your
screen.

It does not change the actual finished size of your boat name.
You can move around the designer using the navigation controls or the Next and Back
buttons without losing your design.

2. Choose Your Letter Style

Select CHOOSE LETTER STYLE to open the font selector.
Rather than trying to imagine what your boat name will look like from a font name, the designer lets you see your own wording in different lettering style.

Try a few.

A bold block font can work well on a powerboat, while a flowing script or traditional serif can completely change the character of a yacht or cruiser.

Finding the right font

The font selector lets you browse different categories. When you find the style you want, select it and close the font window.

Design tip

Don’t choose a font purely because it looks good enlarged on your computer screen.
Think about:

  • how far away the boat will normally be viewed
  • the length of your boat name
  • how much room you have on the hull
  • whether thin lettering will have enough contrast
  • whether you plan to add an outline or shadow

Long names generally work better with a slightly narrower letter style.

3. Choose Your Boat Name Colour

Next, choose the main colour of your lettering.  Click a colour and watch the preview change.  This is the primary colour from which your boat name will be produced.
Don't forget contrast
The best colour isn’t necessarily your favourite colour.  It needs to work against the colour of your boat.  White lettering can look fantastic on navy, black or dark blue hulls, while darker colours  generally work better against white or pale gelcoat.  If there isn’t enough contrast, adding an outline or shadow can make a huge difference.

4. Set Your Boat Colour

This is one of the particularly useful parts of our designer.

Under Boat Colour, choose the colour that most closely matches your hull.

The designer changes the background behind your lettering so you can get a much better idea
of how the finished design will look on your actual boat.

Important

The Boat Colour is only a preview.

We don’t supply a big coloured rectangle behind your boat name.

Your actual boat becomes the background.

Your lettering is supplied ready to install, pre-spaced and correctly aligned using application tape to hold the design in position during installation.

5. Add a Shadow, Outline — or Both

Want the name to stand out more?
Open the Effects section.

You can create:

  • No effect — a clean single-colour boat name
  • Outline — adds a second colour around the lettering
  • Shadow — creates depth behind the lettering
  • Both â€” combines an outline and shadow for a three-colour design
An effect isn't just decorative.
A contrasting outline can make lettering dramatically easier to see when the main colour is  similar to the hull.

6. Choose Your Outline and Shadow Colours

Once you’ve selected an effect, choose the colours used for your outline and/or shadow.

The live preview lets you experiment before you commit.

A three-colour design can combine:

  1. your main letter colour
  2. an outline colour
  3. a shadow colour
A simple rule
Don’t add colours just because you can.  Two strong colours often look cleaner than three competing colours.  Use the extra colour when it improves contrast, depth or readability.

7. Choose the Finished Height

Once you’re happy with the look, move to the Size & Price area.
Choose the finished height of the boat name.

The price is calculated partly from:

  • the height of the lettering
the number of colours in the design
  • The price appears once a height has been selected.
How we measure height

This is important.

Height is measured from the lettering baseline to the highest point of the design,
including any outline or shadow.
Tails that hang below the baseline â€” such as parts of some lowercase letters â€” are not
included in that height measurement.

Watch the 275 mm point

Designs above approximately 275 mm high can increase significantly in price because they
can require substantially more vinyl across the width of the material.
If your design is just over this point and price is important, try reducing the height slightly
and compare the result.

8. Need the Name to Fit a Particular Space?

Use RESTRICT LENGTH (OPTIONAL) if you have a maximum amount of space
available along your hull.

For example, if the usable area is 1200 mm long, enter that maximum length.

The designer will restrict the name only if the natural design would otherwise be longer
than the length you enter.

This is particularly useful for:

  • transoms
  • narrow side panels
  • boats with windows or fittings near the name
Better still — measure the boat first

Measure the space available on the boat rather than guessing.

Allow some breathing room around the name instead of trying to fill every millimetre.

9. Add Your Registration Numbers

You can also create your registration numbers while you’re designing your name.

Select REGO NUMBER and enter your boat registration.

The registration preview changes as you type.
You can choose a separate font for your rego numbers or coordinate them with your boat name. For many boats, a simple, easy-to-read block font works best. You can then use colours that coordinate with the boat name so the whole boat looks intentionally designed rather than like the registration numbers were added afterwards.
Check your legal requirements
Registration-number size, positioning and contrast requirements vary between Australian states and territories. Always make sure your finished registration numbers meet the requirements that apply to your vessel.

10. Add a Home Port

Larger cruisers and yachts sometimes display a home port below or near the boat name.

You can set this separately in the designer.
Enter your home port and choose its lettering style.
Home ports generally look best:

  • considerably smaller than the boat name
  • in a clean, readable font
  • in capital letters
  • positioned so they support rather than compete with the main name

You don’t need a home port simply because the designer offers one. Use it when it suits the
type and style of your boat.

11. Check the Whole Design

Before ordering, take a minute to check everything.

Make sure you’ve checked:

  • spelling
  • capital letters
  • font
  • main colour
  • boat/background colour
  • outline
  • shadow
  • effect colours
  • finished height
  • maximum length
  • registration number
  • home port
  • quantity

And look at the design as a whole.

Sometimes a font or colour that looked good by itself doesn’t work as well once an outline,
shadow or rego numbers are added.
That’s exactly why we built the live preview.

12. Choose Your Quantity

For boat names, quantity refers to the number of finished boat names you require.

For example:
One name for the transom → Quantity 1

Matching names for port and starboard → Quantity 2

Registration numbers are normally supplied as a pair where applicable.

13. Check the Price

Your current price is displayed in the order section once you’ve chosen the required size.

Adding extra colours through shadows and outlines can increase the price because more
material and production work are required.

If you’d like to bring the price down, try:

  • slightly reducing the height
  • removing one colour
  • using an outline OR shadow rather than both

You can see the effect on your design as you make the changes.

14. Add Your Design to the Cart

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I see what my boat name will look like before I order?

Yes.

The designer updates the preview as you change the wording, font, colours and effects.

You can even change the background to approximate the colour of your boat.

Does the Boat Colour become part of my sticker?

No.

Boat Colour is there only to help you visualise the design against your hull.

Can I add an outline to my boat name?

Yes. You can create a single-colour name, add an outline, add a shadow or combine both.

Can I use more than one colour?

Yes. The designer allows you to combine a main lettering colour with outline and shadow colours.

How is the height measured?

The height is measured from the lettering baseline to the highest part of the design, including outline and shadow effects. Letter tails extending below the baseline are not included.

What does Restrict Length mean?

It lets you enter the maximum space available on your boat. The design is only restricted if its
normal length would exceed that measurement.

Should I order one boat name or two?

Order one if you’re placing the name in one position, such as the transom.
Choose quantity two if you need matching names on both sides of the boat.

Can I design my rego numbers at the same time?

Yes. The designer includes a separate registration-number section so you can coordinate the font and colours with your boat name.
